This was an event organized by Naila Kulhman. The collaborators included the University of British Columbia Graduate Student Association, University of British Columbia Debate Society, and Dr. Alina Sotskova. In an informal, cafe format, we discussed topics such as related to neurodiversity, neuroscience, and inevitable controversies and ethical dilemmas that arise. For example, we discussed whether mental health difficulties should be conceptualized as “disorders” or as parts of human diversity. The UBC Debate Society presented an impassioned debate on this subject to illustrate the complexities of this topic. It was very much a discussion-based event during which audience members were active participants in asking questions and offering perspectives, and there were many valuable conversations that occurred that evening.
